Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels in Cardiff
Solar panels are the best pigeon housing ever fitted to Cardiff roofs. The gap beneath the array is warm, dry, sheltered from wind and safe from gulls and cats, and unlike most birds, pigeons nest all year round. Once one pair moves in, the scrabbling over the bedroom ceiling starts at dawn, the droppings streak the panels and the roof below, and the nest material begins working its way into the guttering.
It’s the fastest-growing job on our books, and the solar-heavy streets of Radyr, Thornhill, Lakeside and Danescourt are exactly where it’s growing. The good news: done properly, it’s a one-off fix.
The job at a glance
- Visits: a survey, then clearance and meshing.
- What happens: the array is cleared, cleaned and meshed off; clipped to the panels, never drilled, warranty intact.
- Price: quoted per array and confirmed by text before we set off.
Why pigeons under panels can’t just be left
Beyond the noise, there are practical reasons not to wait. Pigeon droppings are acidic and they shade the very cells that earn the panels’ keep, cutting output panel by panel. Dry nest material packed against warm electrical components is something no electrician wants to find. Debris washes into gutters and blocks them. And an occupied roost brings hangers-on (bird mites among them) that can find their way from the array into the loft. The colony also grows: pigeons return to where they were raised, so this year’s two birds are next year’s eight.
Pigeon proofing solar panels: how the mesh works
The fix is a purpose-made mesh skirt fitted right around the array, closing the gap between the panels and the roof. Two details matter and we’re happy to be checked on both. First, the mesh fixes to the panel edges with clips. Nothing is drilled, glued or screwed to the panels or the roof, so the panels, the roof covering and the installation warranty stay exactly as they were. Second, the space underneath is cleared and cleaned before the mesh goes on: fouling, nests and debris out, so you’re not sealing the problem (or the smell that attracts new birds) under your own panels.
Where there are eggs or chicks under the array, timing comes into it: nests in use are worked around, not swept aside, and because pigeons breed in every month of the year we’ll survey first and be straight with you about the right moment. Usually it’s sooner than people fear.
What it costs
Quoted per job, because the price depends on the size of the array, the height and access of the roof, and how much fouling needs clearing before the mesh goes on. A photo of the roof from the street plus a rough panel count is usually enough for a realistic quote, confirmed in writing before we attend. That quote is free.
What we’d gently warn against is the cut-corner version: mesh cable-tied on without clearing underneath, or screws through the roof covering. The first seals in the mess; the second creates a leak you’ll meet in winter. Fitted properly, the mesh outlasts the pigeons’ patience by years.
Common questions about solar panel proofing
How much does it cost to pigeon-proof solar panels?
It varies with array size, roof height and the clearing needed, which is why we quote per job rather than advertising a number that wouldn’t hold. Send a photo of the roof and a rough panel count and we’ll give you a realistic figure, confirmed by text before we set off.
Will the mesh damage the panels or void the warranty?
No. The mesh clips to the panel edges. Nothing is drilled, screwed or glued to the panels or the roof, so the installation and its warranty are untouched. It’s the detail worth asking anyone about before they ladder up.
Do you clear the mess out first?
Always. Fouling, nest material and debris come out and the area is cleaned before the mesh goes on. Meshing over an occupied larder is how you end up with a sealed-in smell and a returning problem.
There are chicks under there now. What happens?
Nests in use are worked around, not swept aside. Pigeons breed year-round, so we’ll survey, tell you when the work can genuinely happen, and plan it properly. The wait is usually shorter than people fear.
Can pigeons get back in?
Not through mesh that’s been fitted properly. It’s a physical barrier with no gaps and nothing to wear off. They’ll try for a few days, sulk on the ridge, and move on.
