Seagull Control in Cardiff

Before anything else, it’s important to be clear about the law, because it shapes what can and can’t be done. The “seagulls” nesting on Cardiff, Penarth and Barry rooftops (properly, herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls) are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Their nests and eggs cannot simply be removed on request, whatever some websites imply.

This page sets out what’s realistic: what the law allows, why proofing is almost always the real answer, and why timing matters more with gulls than with any other pest we deal with.

The job at a glance

  • Visits: assessed per job; timing matters, because proofing happens outside the nesting season.
  • What happens: lawful proofing with the licensing side handled wherever the law requires it.
  • Price: quoted per roof after the assessment; the conversation costs nothing.

Seagull control in Cardiff: what the law allows

Interfering with an active gull nest or its eggs requires a licence from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), granted only where there’s genuine justification (typically a serious risk to public health or safety) and where non-lethal alternatives have been properly considered. It is not a rubber stamp; it is assessed case by case, and it takes time.

We’ll give you a straight assessment of whether your situation is likely to meet that bar, and we won’t take on work that can’t be done lawfully. What we will always be able to offer is the better long-term answer: stopping the birds nesting on the roof in the first place, so the licensing question never arises.

Seagull proofing, and why the timing matters

Seagull proofing means fitting netting, tensioned wire or spikes to the flat roofs, ridges, chimney stacks and parapets where gulls land and nest, closing the site down so they settle elsewhere. Done well, it lasts for years. But it has to be carried out at the right time of year, outside the nesting season, because you cannot lawfully or practically proof a roof with an active nest and chicks on it.

That’s why lead time is everything with gulls. Proofing planned and installed in the quieter months, autumn through late winter, prevents next season’s problem entirely. Leave it until birds are dive-bombing above your premises in June, and the options narrow to managing the nuisance until the season ends. It also tends to be a considered piece of work: a proper survey, access equipment, sometimes scaffolding on larger buildings. Another reason to start the conversation early rather than mid-crisis.

Much of this work is commercial (managing agents, flat roofs above shops, coastal premises in Penarth and Barry) and it sits alongside our pigeon proofing and wider commercial pest control work.

What it costs

Quoted per job. Seagull work varies enormously (the building, the access, the proofing system required, and whether any licensing is involved), so a real figure only comes after a proper look. We’ll survey the roof, explain what’s realistic and lawful, and give you a clear written quote before anything starts.

Common questions about seagulls

Can you remove a seagull nest from my roof?

Not on request. An active gull nest is protected, and lawful removal needs an NRW licence granted only with genuine justification, usually public health or safety. We’ll assess whether that genuinely applies to you; for most properties, proofing outside the season is the real answer.

Are seagulls protected in Wales?

Yes. Herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls (the roof-nesters) are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, along with their nests and eggs. That’s not scaremongering; it’s simply the framework any reputable operator works within.

The gulls are nesting right now. Can you help today?

Once there’s an active nest, options are limited by law and practicality until the season ends. What we can do is advise on managing the immediate nuisance, then plan proofing for the right time of year so it never happens again.

When should I arrange seagull proofing?

Ahead of the nesting season, autumn to late winter is ideal. Get in touch early: the planning and any licensing take time, and proofing has to be done in the right season to work.

What does seagull proofing cost?

It’s quoted per job, because roof size, access and the right system vary so much between buildings. After a survey you’ll have a clear written figure, and a proofing job done properly is a one-off cost, not an annual one.
