Pigeon Control in Cardiff

Feral pigeons are a fixture of Cardiff’s rooftops and shopfronts, and where they settle, the mess is more than cosmetic. Fouling builds up on ledges, sills and signage; nests and feathers block gutters and flat-roof outlets; and the constant cooing and clatter from a favoured ledge wears thin fast. Pigeon droppings are acidic. Left to accumulate they damage stonework and paint, and a fouled fire escape or pavement is a genuine slip and health risk.

Unlike most birds, pigeons nest all year round. Whatever month you’re reading this, the problem on your building is current, and so is the fix.

The job at a glance

  • Visits: a survey first, then the proofing visit.
  • What happens: spikes, netting and wire fitted properly to the building, with fouling addressed where it needs to be.
  • Price: quoted per building and confirmed by text before work is booked.

Pigeon control in Cardiff: proofing that fits the building

Pigeon work is proofing work: make the landing and nesting spots unusable and the birds move on. The right system depends on the surface and how the birds use it. Stainless-steel spikes stop perching on ledges, sills and signage. Netting seals larger areas (recesses, balconies, under-canopy spaces) so birds can’t get in to roost. Tensioned post-and-wire gives a nearly invisible deterrent on parapets where appearance matters. And chimney pots (the other Cardiff favourite, along with the warm junctions around them) get capped and meshed with proper guards, which stops the nesting and the blocked-flue risk in one go.

We survey the building first, work out where and why the pigeons are settling, and recommend what actually fits, not a one-size product. Where there’s heavy fouling, it’s cleared and the area disinfected before proofing goes up, so the job starts clean and the smell that attracts birds back is gone.

Nesting under solar panels

The fastest-growing pigeon problem in Cardiff’s suburbs (Radyr, Thornhill, Lakeside, Danescourt) is the gap beneath solar panels: warm, sheltered and out of reach of gulls and cats. Proofing an array is a job of its own, so it has its own page: pigeon proofing solar panels, with how the mesh fits, the warranty question and what shapes the price.

What it costs

Quoted per job, because pigeon proofing depends entirely on the building: the surfaces involved, the access, the amount of fouling to clear, and the right system for the site. We’ll survey it, give you a clear written quote, and confirm before any work starts. For premises with an ongoing need, this sits naturally within our commercial pest control work.

Common questions about pigeons

How do I stop pigeons nesting under my solar panels?

A mesh skirt around the array, clipped to the panel edges (no drilling, no warranty risk), after the space beneath is cleared and cleaned. It’s become one of our most requested jobs, and it’s a permanent fix rather than a deterrent.

Is pigeon proofing humane?

Yes. Spikes, netting, wire and mesh simply make surfaces unusable for landing and nesting; nothing harms the birds. They relocate. It’s the standard, responsible approach, and the only one that lasts.

How long does proofing last?

Years. It’s a physical barrier with nothing to wear off. The variable is fit: the right system, properly installed for the specific building, which is what the survey is for.

Do you clear the mess as well?

Yes. Fouling and nest material are cleared and the area disinfected before proofing goes up. Droppings are acidic, they harbour insect pests, and their smell draws birds back to old roosts.

Can’t I just get a plastic owl?

The pigeons of Cardiff have seen every owl, kite and rubber snake the internet sells, and they perch on them. Static deterrents fail because nothing bad ever happens; physical proofing works because the ledge simply stops being usable.
