Moth Treatment in Cardiff
By the time you spot moths fluttering out of a wardrobe, the damage is usually already done, because it isn’t the adults eating your things. It’s their larvae, working quietly in the dark. Two kinds do the damage in Cardiff homes, and they’re worth telling apart because they attack different things. The good news: treatment for both is effective and straightforward once you know which you’ve got.
Discreet as standard: unmarked vehicle, no branded uniform.
The job at a glance
- Visits: usually a single treatment, with pheromone monitoring available afterwards.
- What happens: treatment goes where the larvae live, which is rarely where you see the moths.
- Price: quoted for the rooms affected and confirmed by text before we attend.
Clothes moths
Clothes moths go for natural fibres: wool, cashmere, silk, and the wool content of suits and blankets. The signs are irregular holes in knitwear, thinning patches in a favourite jumper, and small silken cases or webbing tucked into the folds of stored clothes. They love the dark and the undisturbed: the back of the wardrobe, the blanket box, the winter coat that hasn’t moved since March.
Carpet moths
Carpet moths do the same work at floor level, grazing wool and wool-mix carpets, typically along skirtings, under heavy furniture, and in the quiet corners a vacuum never reaches. You’ll find threadbare tracks and patches where the pile has been eaten away. In the period homes of Llandaff and Pontcanna, with their original wool carpets and stair runners, they can do serious damage before anyone notices.
Moth treatment in Cardiff: how we deal with them
Whichever kind you’ve got, the job is to find the source (the infested garment, rug or run of carpet where the larvae actually are) and treat the affected areas and harbourage points thoroughly. This is sometimes called fumigation, though what we actually carry out is an effective, targeted insecticide treatment, applied where larvae live rather than misted at the flying adults, which achieves nothing.
We’ll also advise on the practical side: hot-washing or freezing what’s salvageable, and disturbing the quiet spots they favour so the treatment holds long-term.

What it costs
Moth work is priced by the rooms involved; clothes and carpet moths on the same structure. A quick call, or a WhatsApp photo with the room count, gets you a firm figure confirmed by text before we set off. There’s no charge for asking.
After a treatment, we can also leave pheromone monitors in place: discreet traps with an attractant that keep watch and give an early read on whether anything’s returned. A small additional cost, and worth it for a wardrobe you’ve just rescued.
Common questions about moths
Are the holes in my clothes definitely moths?
Often, but carpet beetles cause very similar damage and need a slightly different approach. Moth damage comes with silken webbing; beetle damage with bristly shed larval skins. Send us a photo of the damage or the culprit and we’ll tell you which you’ve got. There’s a full comparison on the carpet beetle page.
Will I lose the carpet?
Not usually. Treated carpet is generally fine to keep, and damaged patches can often be repaired or hidden. We’ll be honest about anything genuinely too far gone.
Why do they keep coming back after I clean?
Because the source is still there: an infested item at the back of a cupboard, or larvae under furniture the vacuum never moves. Finding that source is most of the job; treating around it is the rest.
Do the cedar balls and lavender bags work?
As a deterrent for clean, stored clothes, mildly. Against an established infestation, no; they don’t touch the larvae doing the eating. By the time you can see damage, it’s past the lavender stage.
How do I stop them returning?
Regular disturbance of the quiet spots (move the furniture, vacuum the edges, rotate the wardrobe) and store woollens clean and sealed. We’ll give you the practical pointers that fit your house on the day.
