Mouse Control in Cardiff
Mice are quieter tenants than rats, which is exactly why they get missed for so long. The tell-tale signs: small dark droppings the size of rice grains along skirtings and in the backs of kitchen cupboards, nibbled packaging, a faint ammonia smell, and on long-used runs sometimes faint smear marks (though heavy black greasing is more of a rat sign), and soft scratching or rustling in the walls and ceilings once the house goes quiet. One mouse is rarely one mouse: they breed quickly, and they’re perfectly happy living in a cavity wall or under the floor.
This is a discreet visit as standard. We arrive in an unmarked vehicle with no branded uniform or signage, so as far as anyone can tell, you’ve simply had a visitor.
We’ll always confirm who we are when we arrive, and you’re welcome to see our certifications and insurance documents on request.
The job at a glance
- Visits: usually two to three; more where they are well established.
- Timing: we aim to attend within two working days, often sooner, and most jobs run over a few weeks.
- What happens: thorough baiting, the obvious routes closed, and honesty about what mouse-proofing can genuinely promise.
- Price: a clear figure by text before we attend; the phone quote costs nothing.
What we actually do for mice
First, some honesty you won’t hear from everyone: a mouse fits through a hole the width of a biro, and a Cardiff terrace has more of those than anyone could ever find, let alone seal. Nobody can truthfully promise to mouse-proof a house completely, so we won’t. What actually works is dealing thoroughly with the infestation that’s there, then closing the obvious, likely routes in so the easy ways back are gone.
On the first visit we find where they’re active and how they’re moving: around incoming pipework, under badly fitted doors, through the gaps where cables and services enter, up from the sub-floor. In the terraces of Pontcanna and Canton, next door’s building work is a classic trigger: disturb one house in a row and the mice simply move sideways.
Then it’s control first: trapping does much of the work, and in living spaces any bait goes in sealed, tamper-resistant stations that are safe around pets and children. For mice we typically use alphachloralose, a mouse-specific rodenticide with about the lowest secondary-poisoning risk in the trade, because its mode of action barely touches anything larger than a mouse. Its one quirk: it loses effectiveness in serious summer heat, and we plan treatments around that. The proofing that earns its keep happens at kitchen level (the gap around the waste pipe, the worn door threshold, the broken airbrick), closed with anti-gnaw mesh, wire wool and filler. A typical mouse job takes two to three visits, more where the infestation’s had time to establish, and we’ll tell you which yours looks like after the first look.
Lofts are their own case. Proofing a loft against mice is rarely practical, so once we’re certain it’s mice up there, the practical approach is usually to bait the space directly. A closed loft is well out of reach of pets and children, and unlike rats or squirrels, mice don’t leave you with something dying out of reach in a wall cavity. If there’s any doubt about what’s actually moving around up there, the bait stays in sealed stations until the evidence settles it.

The gaps worth checking yourself
Where pipes enter under the sink. The gap beneath the back door. Airbricks with broken louvres. The hole the washing-machine waste runs through. If you can slide a biro in, a mouse considers it a front door.
What mouse control in Cardiff costs
A typical mouse job takes two to three visits, sometimes more where the infestation’s had time to dig in, and the price follows that plan, not the other way round. Call us or WhatsApp a photo, tell us what you’re seeing, and you’ll have a figure for the first visit and any likely follow-ups, confirmed by text before anyone sets off. Quotes are free. Tenants aren’t always the ones who pay: whether your landlord is responsible usually turns on how the mice got in, and why.
Common questions about mice
How much is pest control for mice?
The cost tracks the depth of the infestation and the visits it needs. Most jobs run to two or three, though a well-established infestation can take more. Call or WhatsApp a photo and you’ll have a clear picture and a firm quote, confirmed by text before we attend. There’s no charge for asking.
What does pest control actually do for mice?
Deal with the infestation properly (trapping, and sealed bait stations where genuinely needed), then close the obvious entry points that can actually be closed. What we won’t do is promise to seal a house against a creature that fits through a biro-width hole; anyone who does is selling you something.
I’ve only seen one mouse. Is that a problem?
Usually it means there are more you haven’t seen; mice breed fast and stay out of sight. Dealing with it early is a far smaller job than waiting until they’re established in the walls.
How long does it take to get rid of mice?
Most household jobs resolve across two to three visits over a few weeks, but it genuinely depends on the depth of the infestation. A long-established population takes more visits to run down, and we’ll say so up front if yours looks that way rather than promise a number the mice haven’t agreed to.
Will you need to lift floors or make a mess?
Rarely. Most entry points can be found and sealed without disruption. If anything more involved is genuinely needed, we’ll explain it first and the decision stays yours.
