Cardiff Council Pest Control: Prices, Booking and How It Compares

By Henry, Taff Pest Control · Reviewed October 2026

When something scratches in the wall, plenty of Cardiff households ring the council first. Fair enough: it’s the name everyone knows, and it’s been around for decades. We run an independent pest control business in this city, so you might expect us to steer you away from it, and honestly, in most cases we would. But you deserve the accurate picture rather than a sales pitch, so here it is: what the council service covers, what it charges, and exactly where the difference lies.

Just want to book the council? Cardiff Council takes bookings through an online form on its pest control page, then rings you to take payment and give you a date. Outside Cardiff, each council’s booking route is further down this page.

Cardiff Council pest control prices

The council runs a paid pest service for residents at fixed rates, with a set number of visits included in the fee. Their published prices at the time of writing:

Mice£753
Squirrels£753
Wasps£751

* Bed bugs and cockroaches are paused in homes. At the time of writing, the council’s page says it can’t treat either in residential properties, with no date given for that changing. The prices above are still listed on its page.

Read from the council’s website in October 2026. The council includes VAT in these prices. Fees and services change, so confirm on the council’s page (linked above) when you book.

On headline price, the council’s fixed rates are the budget route for some jobs. That’s worth saying plainly, because the difference you’re paying for with an independent isn’t the visit. It’s what happens on it.

Council or independent: the honest comparison

The model is the difference. The council service is a set number of visits at a fixed price: treat, check, repeat, done. What that price doesn’t include is anyone hunting for the source (the defective drain, the gap under the decking, the route in). If the included visits run out before the problem does because the way in was never found, the answer is booking more visits. Our work runs the other way round: find the source, deal with the infestation, fix what let it happen, so you stop paying for repeat performances.

And a fair word for the person who turns up. None of this is a dig at the technician on your doorstep. Get one who cares about the job and they’ll genuinely try their best for you. But they’re working to a clock the council sets, with a day’s run of jobs to get through, and no amount of caring stretches a timed slot into an investigation. The big national chains run their technicians exactly the same way. It’s the model that sells you short, not the person in it.

Waiting time. The council works on a booked-appointment basis, and how soon they come depends on demand. We aim to attend within two working days, often sooner, and we’ll tell you honestly on the phone when we can get to you.

Continuity. With the council you get whichever officer is on the rota; competent, but not necessarily the same person twice. With us, the person who quotes the job attends every visit, and on rat work especially, each visit builds on what the last one found. That’s hard to do when the last visit was someone else.

Proofing. Nothing in a fixed-fee visit plan pays anyone to close entry points. Our approach is built around exactly that, and it’s the difference between treating rats and ending a rat problem. Proofing against mice is more limited, because a mouse needs only a biro-width gap; we close the obvious routes in use.

Discretion. A council pest van outside the house tells the street everything. We arrive in an unmarked vehicle with no branded uniform or signage, so as far as anyone can tell, you’ve simply had a visitor.

Where the council fits. Their fixed rates are the budget route, and we’ll be straight about what that buys: the set-visit model is itself the corner being cut. Treating and checking without hunting the source is precisely what this page has been explaining doesn’t end problems. So if price is the only thing that matters, at least you now know exactly what’s included and what isn’t.

Outside Cardiff: what the other councils offer

We also work across the Vale, Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Newport and Bridgend, and the council services there differ more than you might expect. One treats rats free of charge; another doesn’t run a pest service at all. Here’s what each council’s own website said when we read them in October 2026.

CouncilWhat it treats and chargesHow to book
Vale of Glamorgan
Penarth, Barry, Dinas Powys, Sully, Wenvoe, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major
Run by Shared Regulatory Services. Rats and mice £73, wasps £83. Bed bugs, cockroaches and fleas are sprayed: £110 for one floor, or £167 to £240 for a whole house depending on bedrooms. Half price if you receive benefits (the council doesn’t list which ones).By phone or contact form, from the Vale pest control page
CaerphillyRats, cockroaches and bed bugs are free for homes. Mice £59.05; wasps and fleas £41.33. Those three are per treatment, plus VAT.Rats online; other pests by phone, from the council’s pest control page
Rhondda Cynon Taf
Pontypridd, Llantrisant
Rats, mice, cockroaches and bed bugs only: £35.60 each, VAT included. Rats and mice get up to three visits.Online, from the council’s booking page
Newport£70 for rats, mice, squirrels, wasps or ants indoors. Fleas £130 to £165, bed bugs £170 to £220 (one visit), cockroaches £175 to £250, priced by number of rooms. £20 if no treatment turns out to be needed.Online or by phone, from the council’s pest control page
BridgendNo council pest service. The council’s page asks tenants to contact their landlord or housing association, and owners to use a private pest controller.Nothing to book; see the council’s pest control page

The Vale and Newport don’t say whether their prices include VAT. Councils change fees and services with little notice, so check the council’s page before you book. If you’re weighing any council against an independent, the questions from the comparison above still apply: how many visits are included, and will anyone find and close the way in?

Common questions

How much do the council charge for pest control?

At the time of writing: rats, mice or squirrels £75 with three visits included; wasps £75 for one visit; fleas £95 for one floor or £120 for the whole house. Bed bugs and cockroaches are listed at £200 for a one-to-three-bed house or £260 for larger, but the council isn’t treating either in homes at the moment. Fees change periodically; confirm when you book.

Do Cardiff Council treat wasp nests?

Yes: £75 for a single visit at their published rate; on paper, the budget option. The difference is method and follow-through: we treat the nest itself wherever it can be reached, use non-toxic treatments where the nest sits in the open, warn you about the stirred-up hours that follow, and handle the follow-up where the insecticide needs removing safely.

Do the council deal with bed bugs or cockroaches?

Not in homes at the moment. The council’s page says it can’t currently treat bed bugs or cockroaches in residential properties, and gives no date for that changing. Its listed rates are flat, set by house size: £200 for a one-to-three-bed, £260 above that, with two visits included. Flat pricing cuts both ways: a light case pays the full rate, a severe one gets whatever fits two visits. We quote per job after seeing the severity (sometimes that lands under their figure, sometimes over). Either way, our plan to treat bed bugs or clear cockroaches fits your infestation, not your bedroom count, and is carried out discreetly.

How quickly do the council come out?

It depends on demand when you book; ask them for the next available date. For comparison, we aim to attend within two working days, often sooner, and we’ll be straight with you on the phone about when we can realistically get there.

Worth reading: our guide to what pest control costs shows how an independent quote is built. If you rent, landlord and tenant responsibility in Wales may matter more than either price.

If you’d rather talk it through with the person who’d actually attend, we’re happy to help, whichever way the answer goes.
