How Much Does Pest Control Cost? An Honest Guide

By Henry, Taff Pest Control · Reviewed August 2026

Most of this trade hides its prices behind “call for a quote” and leaves it there, which is exactly why you’re searching instead of ringing. We quote every job individually too, because that’s the only honest way to price work that depends on what’s living in your walls. But unlike most, we’ll show you exactly how the number gets built: what drives the cost of pest control up or down, how many visits each pest really needs, and the false economies to avoid. We work across Cardiff and the Vale, but the logic here applies anywhere in the UK.

The short version: quotes by phone or WhatsApp are free, the figure covers the first visit and any likely follow-ups, and it’s confirmed by text before we attend, so you’ll always know the price before anyone sets off. No callout charge for a quote, and no doorstep surprises.

How many visits each pest takes

Visit count is the single biggest driver of any pest control bill, and it’s set by biology, not by the invoice. Here’s what each job genuinely involves:

PestTypical visitsWhy
RatsMinimum 3Confirming, finding the routes in, then proofing and trapping. Elimination, not bait-and-go
Mice2–3Treating the infestation, then closing the entry points that can genuinely be closed
Squirrels2+Trapping with legally required daily checks, then proofing the way in
MolesMinimum 2One visit to set the traps, one to check and clear. That’s trapping’s nature
Fleas, moths, carpet beetlesUsually 1A prepared-for insecticide treatment usually breaks the cycle in one; occasional follow-up
Wasps & hornets1–2One treatment visit; a follow-up only where the insecticide used has to be removed afterwards
Bed bugs, cockroachesMultipleEggs survive first treatments, so follow-ups are how the job works, not upselling
Investigation visit (not sure what, or whether, anything is active)1Findings and a straight recommendation, with the fee agreed before we come

Each job is priced against that visit structure. Where the right first step is an on-site investigation (you’re hearing something but not sure what, or not sure there’s a problem at all), that visit carries a fee of its own, agreed before we come.

What actually drives the price

The number of visits the biology demands. This is the big one. A wasp nest dies from one treatment. A rat problem needs confirming, treating and proofing: a minimum of three visits, declared up front. Cockroach eggs survive the first treatment, so follow-ups aren’t upselling; they’re how the job works.

Scale. Three flea-treated rooms cost less than six. One mole in a lawn costs less than a colony across a paddock.

Access and proofing. A nest behind a fascia board at height, or rat entry points that need meshing and filling: materials and time land in the quote, and we’ll itemise the why. Where a fix is genuinely building or drainage work rather than pest work, we’ll specify it for the right trade instead of charging you for a poor version of it.

Why an honest price starts with a conversation

Bed bugs are the clearest example: severity, rooms affected and follow-up needs vary so much that any fixed price printed on a website would be meaningless, ours or anyone’s. The same logic runs through most pest work, which is why we quote per job: a short conversation or a WhatsApp photo first, then a real figure in writing. Not a doorstep surprise. If a website shows you a single neat number for a rat job, it’s describing the first visit, not the job.

A word about the lowest quote

The classic false economy in this trade is the single cut-price rat visit. It knocks the numbers down for a fortnight, finds no entry points, proofs nothing, and the problem returns with the weather. We don’t offer written guarantees, and we’d be wary of anyone in this trade who does. Pest control is working with nature. What we can promise is honest advice, thorough work, and clear communication about what to expect at every stage.

Worth knowing too: Cardiff Council runs a paid pest service with published rates. For some straightforward jobs it’s a fair option, and we’ve written plainly about how it compares.

The numbers you’ll see elsewhere

Shopping around? Here’s the spread you’ll actually find quoted in Cardiff as of August 2026. The council charges a fixed £75 for rats, mice, squirrels or a wasp nest, with a set number of visits and no proofing included. One national chain publishes rat treatment from £199 plus VAT for two visits, and its own figures put the average Cardiff wasp job at around £168 across the past year. Local firms with published lists price a three-visit rat job around the £145 mark, and the trade directories put the average Cardiff pest job somewhere between £146 and £249.

Whoever quotes, us included, the question worth asking of any figure, high or low, is what the visits include: who finds the way in, who closes it, and who comes back if the evidence says the job isn’t finished.

Common questions

How much is pest control for rats?

With rats the answer is a plan, not a number: a minimum of three visits (confirming the pest, finding the routes in, then proofing and trapping) with established problems taking more. Budget for the whole plan, not one visit: anyone quoting a single low figure is usually pricing one visit, which rarely ends a rat problem. Call or WhatsApp and you’ll have a real figure in writing before anyone attends.

How much is pest control for mice?

Same logic, smaller scale: usually two to three visits, more where the infestation’s had time to establish, with the obvious entry points closed as part of the work. The depth of the infestation is what moves the price, and that’s exactly what a two-minute conversation establishes.

How much does a wasp nest cost to remove?

Quoted per nest: where it sits and how it can be reached shape the price. Whether a follow-up is part of the job varies: where the insecticide used has to be removed afterwards, we return and take the dead nest safely off site; exposed outdoor nests often need no follow-up at all. The full picture is confirmed on the phone before we set off.

Do you charge for quotes?

Quotes cost nothing. Call or WhatsApp a photo and we’ll give you a figure, confirmed by text before we attend. The one thing that does carry a charge is an on-site investigation visit, for when nobody yet knows what’s active or whether anything is. You get our findings and a straight recommendation, with the fee agreed before we come.

Does home insurance cover pest control?

Usually not as standard. Most policies treat infestations as maintenance rather than an insured event, though some home-emergency add-ons include pest cover. Check your policy documents before assuming either way; we’ll happily provide whatever paperwork your insurer needs.
